On June 4, 2009, Chinese President Hu Jintao met with visiting Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Tun Razak at the Great Hall of the People.

Hu said the two countries are friendly neighbors across the sea. Their ties had developed smoothly in the last 35 years, with frequent high-level visits, increasing political trust and fruitful cooperation in trade, energy and infrastructure. The two countries had scored gratifying results in cooperation on humanities. Both sides had also worked together to promote cooperation in East Asia and maintained coordination in dealing with the international financial crisis, Hu added.

The two countries are good-neighbors, friends and partners, Hu said, adding that cementing strategic and cooperative partnership was an important component in China's peripheral diplomacy. Hu said China would take the 35th anniversary of China-Malaysia diplomatic ties and their joint action plan on strategic cooperation as opportunities to comprehensively expand and lift tangible cooperation in bilateral and multilateral areas and to open up a brighter future for bilateral ties.

Najib fully agreed with Hu's positive comments on bilateral ties, saying that Malaysia deems China a sincere friend and cooperative partner. Bilateral ties have made substantial progress since the establishment of diplomatic relations 35 years ago. He said the joint action plan on strategic cooperation outlined future political, economic, cultural, educational, scientific and energy cooperation and opened up broad prospect for bilateral ties. He said Malaysia would join hands with China to promote bilateral relations and regional cooperation to deal with the financial crisis. He expressed belief that in the next 35 years the development of bilateral ties will witness even greater outcome.

Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi and other officials attended the meeting.
