Wu Bangguo Meets with Malaysian Supreme Head of State Tuanku Syed Sirajuddin

On May 31, 2005, Chairman Wu Bangguo of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress (NPC) of China, who was paying an official good-will visit to Malaysia, met with Malaysian Supreme Head of State Tuanku Syed Sirajuddin and his wife at Istana Negara (royal palace).

Wu Bangguo said that China and Malaysia are close neighbours and the peoples of the two countries have been living in harmony for thousands of years and have built profound friendship. Proceeding from the fundamental interests of the two peoples and the long- term strategy of the two countries, leaders of the elder generation of both countries realized the normalization of bilateral ties 31 years ago. Malaysia was the first of the ASEAN countries to establish diplomatic tie with China. This opened a new chapter for China-Malaysia friendliness and created conditions for China to develop relations with the ASEAN. We are happy to see that with more than three decades of growth, the good neighbourly friendship between China and Malaysia has entered a new phase of comprehensive development. During his current visit, he had extensive contacts with Malaysian leaders and friends from different sectors and deeply felt the strong aspiration of both sides to develop strategic cooperation between China and Malaysia. I believe that China-Malaysia relationship will enjoy a more beautiful future so long as the two sides follow the common aspiration and continue to strengthen the exchanges and cooperation in such fields as economy, trade, and humanity.

Sirajuddin said that he was happy to meet with Chairman Wu Bangguo. He said that since the establishment of diplomatic ties, the friendly relationship between China and Malaysia has been growing smoothly and the mutually beneficial cooperation has brought about tangible benefits to both peoples. The Malaysian side is willing to intensify the cooperation with China in such fields as energy, education, culture, and tourism in a bid to benefit the two peoples.

Zhang Ruizhen, Chairman Wu Bangguo's wife and Re Di, Vice Chairman of the NPC Standing Committee were also present at the meeting.

On the morning, Wu Bangguo also met in the hotel where he stayed with the staffs of the Chinese Embassy in Malaysia, and representatives of Chinese-funded enterprises and overseas Chinese students.
